BOOK History

It was back in '69 - Milan was in a climate of creativity ferment and that strange new creative vein called design. It was in that atmosphere that Titti Fabiani designed Book. A piece that is still in great demand and loved all over the world.
At the very root of its success is the philosophy that inspired it: the more linear the design, the more beautiful and durable it will be. Because Titti Fabiani is convinced that design should not be fashion or stylism, but it should offer absolute solutions at all times by meeting people's concrete needs. She chose a square - a module as simple as possible. The repetition of this element creates a special harmony and sense of order proper of this bookshelf. Book repairs the personal items, protects them from the aggression of dust, The objects are nicely exposed, never hidden. The choice of the square also has a structural sense. The solid wood doors (a brilliant solution to make the piece last over time) can be changed over the years, because wood is a living material, The two horizontal crosspieces of the door stabilise it.
Book's useful dimensions have been carefully studied. The ratio of two to three is repeated again and again – see the frontal rhythm created by a single element, the section of the solid wood, the number of Books used to form a two-by-two metre square on the wall...
The features explaining its validity are infinite: from the dust-proof rubber, to the modularity development and the range of available colors.
But at the very heart of all this invention is the repetition of the square rhythm ad infinitum - thus fitting into the living space as an architectural element.

Achille Castiglioni stops in front of Book

Having a design titan choose the cabinet you’ve created – upon first sight, no less – doesn’t happen to everybody.
But it happened to Titti Fabiani with Book. It was in the 1970s at the Milan Salone del Mobile.

Achille Castiglioni stops in front of Book
He looked at it, opened it, walked away, came back, looked at it again, ran his fingers over the grooves made for opening the cabinet, congratulated her and…ordered it for its home!

Book lands in New York City

Book landed in New York City in 1978, in the large “Abitare” shop on 57th Street, opened by Techinteriors. The store was teeming with designers and design enthusiasts. It was very emotional to hear New Yorkers trying to speak Italian, looking at The New York Times Design Section, where Book dominated the front page. Woody Allen was preparing to shoot Manhattan. And for the main character’s apartment he asked for the most intellectual and quintessentially “Manhattan” furniture available: a large white Book wall.
